Millions of older adults fall each year, but fewer than half tell their doctors when it happens. They may hide these incidents because they are embarrassed or they think it isn’t a big deal, but 1 out of 5 falls cause major injuries. Suffering an injury from falling can severely restrict your level of independence and even cause serious health complications, so it is important to tell your doctor any time you fall, even if you believe you were not injured.
There are some simple steps you can take to prevent in-home falls. You may not realize it, but your home may be full of fall hazards. It is a good idea to make sure any high traffic areas in your home are clear of any boxes, cords, or debris. Store any necessities in easy-to-reach locations. Outfit your bathtub with a proper non-slip mat; you may also want to install a grab bar and/or a plastic seat to avoid falling in the shower. Make sure your living space is well-lit so you can see anything in your way. You may also choose to wear shoes with nonskid soles to keep you sturdy on your feet.
